Black plastic is not accepted for recycling in Bloomington, MN. Recycling facilities use optical sorting machines with lasers to identify and sort plastics, and black plastic absorbs the light, making it undetectable to the machinery. Therefore, any black plastic items should be disposed of in your regular garbage.
- Why it's not recyclable: The black pigment absorbs the laser light used in the sorting process, so the machines cannot identify the type of plastic.
- What to do with it: Place black plastic items in your regular trash bin.
- Common black plastic items: This includes things like black plant pots, some takeout containers, and other black plastic packaging.
